Man Against Nature

About this time every year I hear the sounds of lawn equipment in our neighborhood revving up for a new season of yardwork.  Got me wanting to write something about the cyclical nature (no pun intended) of this annual ritual.

Man Against Nature

The whir of an engine,
a machine’s familiar din.
Man against nature, the battle begins again.
When warmer winds prevail,
all creation springs to life.
Man against nature, locked in an epic fight.
’Tis on and on this war will rage,
throughout summer’s brutal heat.
Man against nature, looks like nature has him beat.
Until at last the cool returns,
fall colors will unfold.
Man against nature, man slowly gets control.
Seems winter now has nature
locked in its icy press.
Man against nature, man can finally rest.
